The digital transformation of healthcare has brought with it an enormous number of connected devices, offering huge potential to improve patient care and cut costs. Yet, this revolution comes with a significant challenge: as more devices come online, the risk of cyberattacks that could compromise clinical data and patient privacy also grows. Addressing this is a critical mission for both the TITAN and ENTRUST projects.
While operating independently, these two EU-funded projects are working on complementary aspects of one complex problem. Together, they are helping to create a more robust and trustworthy digital ecosystem for healthcare data.
The TITAN Approach
The TITAN project, on the other hand, is dedicated to securing the next stage of the data’s journey. The project is developing a software platform for confidential collaboration and privacy-preserving data processing. Its overall objective is to enable the secure and ethical use of sensitive data, such as that collected from medical devices, in a shared environment like the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
While ENTRUST focuses on ensuring the device can be trusted, TITAN is creating the secure data space where information from these devices can be analysed and shared without compromising privacy.
The ENTRUST Approach
ENTRUST sits at the forefront of securing this new generation of connected medical devices. The project’s mission is to tackle the lack of cybersecurity in these devices without limiting their usability. A comprehensive trust management architecture is being built to secure the entire lifecycle of connected medical devices, from their design to their day-to-day operation.
By introducing a framework for Dynamic Trust Assessment, ENTRUST’s innovations help establish a new level of security. Its approach uses modern technology, including real-time verification and distributed ledgers, to continuously check a device’s trustworthiness. In essence, ENTRUST is focused on making sure the data’s source—the medical device itself—is secure and reliable.
A Combined Impact
The synergy between TITAN and ENTRUST is clear: while each project has its own technical mission, both are champions for secure data in healthcare.
By working together, both projects can amplify their messages and reach a wider audience of researchers and policymakers. This collaboration is a powerful step towards building greater awareness for the importance of a secure and ethical data landscape in healthcare, allowing for a future where patient data can be fully utilised for research and innovation.
